Common Mistakes - By or Until

Until tells us how long a situation continues. If something happens  until  a particular time, you stop doing it at that time. (Until nos fala sobre a duração de alguma atividade. Se algo acontece "until" um tempoo em especifico, significa que você irá parar naquela data). For example: They lived in a small house  until  September 2003.  (They stopped living there in September.) I will be away  until  Wednesday. (I will be back on Wednesday.) We also use  until  in negative sentences. (Usado também nas sentenças negativas) For example: Details will  not  be available  until  January. (January is the earliest you can expect to receive the details.) If something happens  by  a particular time, it happens at or before that time. LISTENING PRACTISE - MOTHER´S DAY

Imagem
As Mother’s Day approaches, you may want to start planning one or two holiday-related activities. Compositions are often a wonderful option because the students are able to find personal meaning in the holiday, though it may not be one that is celebrated in their home countries. As teachers, we are given the privilege of reading these personal forms of expression; students’ compositions allow us to learn more about the people we teach. At the intermediate level and beyond, consider developing or reinforcing students’ awareness of paragraph structure through a series of writing tasks: TASK 1 – Unity within a paragraph. Write 7-8 sentences about your own mother or grandmother. Write them in random order, starting each sentence on a new line. Ask students to read silently and then decide with a partner which sentences could form a paragraph and which ones are off-topic. They should cross out the irrelevant sentences. Correct their work as a class. Model: My mother had dark hair

MOTHER´S VOCABULARY

Mother’s milk, mother wit, and other words containing ‘mother’ This Sunday we celebrate Mother’s Day, also known as Mothering Sunday, in the UK: that day of the year on which mothers are particularly honoured by their children. In North America and South Africa, Mother’s Day is on the second Sunday in May instead. According to  A Dictionary of English Folklore , Mother’s Day as we know it was created almost single-handedly by Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia who persuaded Congress, in 1913, that the second Sunday in May should be dedicated to honouring mothers and motherhood. The concept was brought to Britain by American soldiers during the Second World War, and was later taken up by commercial interests, becoming extremely popular from the 1950s onwards. In Britain, however, the day chosen for Mother’s Day was the fourth Sunday in Lent, previously the traditional day for Mothering Sunday, which Mother’s Day in effect replaced. The day had initially very little to do with honouring
